What 2020 summer courses and programs will be held?

Some course offerings have been canceled or modified. If your student has been enrolled in a course that has been canceled or modified, a Summer Program staff member will contact you to review alternate options.

Updated course listings for the BSAP Summer Institute, G/T Summer Institutes for Talent Development and Innovative Pathways high school programs are accessible on the HCPSS Summer Programs website.

How will the virtual summer courses be held?

Virtual summer programs will have a modified daily/weekly schedule that will incorporate both live sessions and digital content that will be accessed online. The schedule will allow students to interact with teachers and classmates.

Teachers will schedule live lessons and enrichment through Google Meet. Students will comply with behavioral expectations for Google Meet sessions when attending live teaching sessions.

What is occurring for students who previously received interventions, such as Wilson or Visualizing and Verbalizing, in “pull out” models?

At this time, special educators are crafting specially designed instruction based on data from the current IEP, as well as the data derived from Lexia Core5 and/or Dreambox. Wilson and Visualizing and Verbalizing are not being provided at this point in time. Special educators are expected to continue to collaborate with general educators and other interventionists (e.g., reading specialists) to ensure students are receiving instructional intervention that is aligned with goals/objectives noted on the individualized COL plan.

How will “continuity of learning” services be provided to students whose IEPs contain community-based instruction or vocational placements?

Students age 14 and older are required to have transition goals, objectives and activities as part of their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) in the areas of employment, education/training, and independent living. For some students this means they participate in career and community instruction including supported employment. Instruction and services in these areas were considered for each student when his/her Individualized Continuity of Learning Plan (ICOLP) was developed. During distance learning, students will not continue participation in work and community settings.

How are elementary students who have been placed in specialized programs based on Principles of Applied Behavior Analysis receiving services?

Service is provided by the special educator through small group virtual instruction. Both whole-group and small-group lessons are based on alternate achievement standards. Some students also engage with activities provided by the general educator. Students are assigned differentiated work to address individual needs including options that incorporate a range of (low and high) assistive technology. Families receive an individually scheduled opportunity for family coaching on important topics such as prompting and reinforcement.

How will Continuity of Learning be provided to students with a 504 Plan?

Parents who have a student with a 504 Plan receive an Individual Continuity of Learning Plan letter. This letter documents how HCPSS ensures students are provided with access to remote learning to the greatest extent possible given these circumstances based on each student’s Section 504 plans during remote learning. Families were provided with options to ask questions, provide input and better understand how access to remote learning will be provided during this school closure, including engaging in virtual conferences and/or 504 meetings as necessary.

How will I be able to participate meaningfully regarding my child’s IEP services during this time?

Parents are provided with a Individualized Continuity of Learning Plan (COL) proposal and have an opportunity to provide input and affirm their choice for discussing their child’s services during this closure. Parents can engage in virtual IEP conferences or (formal) IEP meetings with teachers. During these meetings, it is important for parents to provide input about the support their child will need to participate in the Individualized COL plan developed by HCPSS. All input will be considered and staff will make every effort to address each child’s needs to the greatest extent possible.

What is the role of special education paraeducators during the 2020-2021 school year?

Special Education paraeducators will provide accommodations and modifications for student assignments aligned with students’ Alternative Service Delivery Amendment to their IEP, serve as observers in virtual sessions to collect data, schedule parent conferences/meetings and assist with other required clerical tasks for special education teachers and related service providers.
