Why did Maryland adopt a new PreK–12 Mathematics Policy?

Per the Maryland State Department of Education, Maryland adopted a new policy to improve student achievement in mathematics, elevate proficiency rates to be among the nation's highest, and address inequitable access to advanced mathematics opportunities. The new policy is designed to ensure every student:

  • Receives equitable math instruction and necessary support as they develop strong numeracy skills that foster engaging mathematical experiences and pave the way for college and career success.
  • Has access to personally meaningful and productive advanced mathematics pathways by the end of 10th grade.
