In light of the number of Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) member schools starting the 2020-2021 academic year in a virtual setting, a two-semester hybrid plan is being developed in consultation with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), Maryland Department of Health (MDH) and Public School Superintendents’ Association of Maryland (PSSAM). The plan is focused on student engagement options in the first semester and modified competition seasons for all sports during the second semester.
The first semester utilizes MPSSAA waivers from the MSDE to allow for out-of-season plans by each local school system for the continued engagement of students. Local school systems are eligible to create any combination of virtual instruction or practice or in-person conditioning, skill development, team-based practices, intramural sports, or intra and inter school scrimmages. Local decisions for student engagement must be based on the level of community spread and any other factors as identified by the local health department.
