What is the current start date for fall 2020 sports tryouts and practices?

UPDATE: October 26, 2020: Today the Maryland State Board of Education approved a start date of December 7, 2020, for high school athletics. HCPSS advocated for this plan, which was crafted by district athletics supervisors and issued by Public School Superintendents’ Association of Maryland. This plan has several benefits that were outlined in our October 9 update. HCPSS will communicate details and updates on athletics as soon as they become available.

On August 3, 2020, the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA), in conjunction with the Maryland Health Department (MHD) and the Public School Superintendent Association of Maryland (PSSAM), postponed the 2020-2021 fall and winter sports competition season to the second semester. A two-semester plan will be released prior to the start of the academic year.

On September 11, 2020, the state finalized its plan for a two-semester return to athletics. With this plan, athletic practices and competitions will not resume until the second semester. Per MPSSAA, winter sports will begin on February 1, 2021, fall sports on March 15, 2021, and spring sports on April 26, 2021.
