Can employees claim unemployment during the state-mandated school closure?

Maryland unemployment benefits are available to individuals who are unemployed through no fault of their own. If an employer must temporarily shut down operations and no work is available, individuals may be eligible for unemployment benefits if:

  1. They meet the monetary criteria, and
  2. They weekly eligibility criteria, and
  3. They are not receiving payment from their employer, such as paid sick/safe leave.
